Korean Hana Centre Grand Opening

Korean Hana Centre is officially open!

On the 7th August, NSW School of Languages officially opened its "Korean Hana Centre" which provides a whole day's immersion in Korean culture and language to visiting students.

Thirty guests including the Korean Education Consul, the Director of the Korean Cultural Centre, the Director of Secondary Education, representatives from Bruce Notley-Smith's office (local member), University of Sydney, the Association of Independent Schools and other principals and Korean teachers. There were speeches, a musical item from the Korean Cultural Centre and delicious Korean food.

Korean Hana Centre - teachers

The name, Hana Centre, in Korean means ‘one in harmony' and the Korean Education Centre, Consulate General of the Republic of Korea has generously contributed to the funding. The centre will provide students with stimulating and authentic cultural experiences to develop their language skills whilst enjoying learning the language. Let's face it, we all learn much better and faster when we are enjoying ourselves in a stimulating environment. Students from other schools teaching Korean (including primary schools) will be able to attend a 4 hour program of activities and learning in Korean.

The Hana Centre is bursting with Korean items and art work which are a part of the Korean immersion program delivery e.g. Hanbok (traditional Korean costumes), dolls, stationery, lanterns and traditional artefacts. Students learn to bow Korean style, create Korean masks, perform traditional Korean plays and even try out both K-Pop and traditional dance styles.

Participation in a Korean Hana Centre program offers students full immersion into a total Korean experience. From the initial welcome to the last goodbye, all communication is in Korean, with Centre staff experienced in communicating effectively with both Korean and non-Korean speakers from Year 5 to 12.
