Lesson days

Face-to-face lesson days at the NSW School of Languages (NSL) provide valuable opportunities for teachers and students to meet, collaborate, and deepen language learning in person. Typically, one lesson day is organised each term for most language subjects. Classes on these days are held from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Notification and permission

Students are routinely reminded of upcoming lesson days via Canvas and by their teacher. These dates are also advertised well in advance on the school website. It is important that students record lesson days in their diary.

A signed permission note from a parent or carer is essential for attendance. Permission notes are either emailed directly to students or can be downloaded from their Canvas site. Students must obtain a parental signature and submit the signed note to the lesson day supervisor for their signature. The signed document must also be emailed to NSL before attending. This is an important legal requirement.

Attendance and additional lessons

Students are encouraged to attend all lesson days. If your child needs extra support, and the home school Principal grants permission, the student is welcome to visit NSL to see their teacher, by appointment only. Please contact your child’s teacher directly to arrange any additional catch-up sessions.

Note: regular weekly individual face-to-face lessons are not available.

Dress code
Students are generally not required to wear their normal school uniform to lesson days unless otherwise specified at the bottom of the lesson day notification.
Parking
There is no student or parent/carer parking available within the school grounds. Limited parking is available on surrounding streets.
Student behaviour
Students are expected to maintain safe and respectful behaviour at all times to ensure a positive learning environment.
Recess and lunch
  • A 15-minute recess break usually occurs between 10:30 am and 11:00 am.
  • Lunch is typically from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm.

Students must remain on school grounds during these breaks and should bring their own recess snacks and lunch. To protect students with allergies, NUTS and nut products are strictly prohibited on the premises. Students who carry an EpiPen or asthma medication are reminded to bring these with them.

The school does not have canteen facilities, so students are encouraged to bring food and drinks from home. A refrigerator and microwave are available in the Student Common Room for student use.

Mobile phones and electronic devices

NSL follows the “Off and Away” management option for mobile phones during lesson days. Students may bring phones but must keep them switched off and stored away in their bags. Parents and carers are welcome to contact the school via the landline if they need to communicate with their child during lesson days.
