High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in leadership, extra curricular activities and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

Extension language courses
In Year 12, students studying 8 languages (Italian, Modern Greek, French, Spanish, Japanese, Indonesian, Chinese) have the option to enrol in an additional 60-hour Extension course. Applications are also open to students studying a two-unit language course at their home school.
Acceleration
To accelerate at our school, students need strong achievement in language learning and the support of their home school, with an application and learning plan developed in consultation with our staff. Final approval depends on student readiness and agreement from parents and both schools
Individualised learning plans
Tailored programs to meet the specific learning needs of gifted language learners.
Online learning flexibility
Due to their specialised distance education model, we provide personalised pacing that benefits gifted students needing accelerated or enriched study options.
Language ambassador program
Our Language Ambassador Program develops student leadership by promoting language learning and cultural awareness through events and peer support. Ambassadors act as role models and advocates within the school and community.

Subject acceleration at NSL

The NSW School of Languages supports the NSW Department of Education’s approach to acceleration as a flexible strategy designed to meet the individual learning needs of gifted and talented students.

This acceleration pathway is recommended for students who demonstrate advanced learning abilities and readiness, including strong academic performance, social and emotional maturity, and a need for greater challenges beyond their current grade level.

Decisions regarding acceleration are made collaboratively by the student, their parents or caregivers, teachers, school leaders from both the home school and NSW School of Languages, and, when appropriate, specialist staff, to ensure the student’s academic, social, and emotional needs are thoroughly considered.

For additional information on acceleration, please contact our enrolments team.
